Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and teams etc)
"Pre-Match Report:"
"Leeds United, fresh from their 3-0 win over Cork City, when David O'Leary and their £3 million signing from Sheffield United, Brian Deane, made their debuts for the Yorkshire club, go into action again on their pre-season Irish tour at Tolka Park tonight when they take on a Bord Gais National League team."
"Leeds, one of the most popular of British clubs with Irish fans, can also show off Gordon Strachan and Tony Dorigo. Leeds are throwing down the gauntlet to the League of Ireland, who have not had a representative fixture since losing 0-2 to the Irish League in 1991."
"Now, as Manager Turlough O'Connor says, "This is a great chance for our standards to be measured against top English League clubs". The squad will face another assignment against Blackburn Rovers, also at Tolka Park on 6th August."
"But O'Connor had his problems yesterday. He had to find replacements for Pat Morley (Cork City), Richard Purdy (Dundalk) and Kevin Brady (Shelbourne) who withdrew with pre-season injuries."
"Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson loves bringing the club to Ireland because of the fanatical Irish support it gets at Elland Road, will no doubt be interested in the performance of Under-Twenty-One International full back, Thomas Dunne, who apparently has become involved in a tug-of-war between Shelbourne and Dundalk and who is said to be very much part of the plans of Bradford City."
" LEAGUE OF IRELAND (v Leeds United): Dave Henderson (Bohemians); Mick Neville (Shelbourne), James Coll (Dundalk), Stuart Gauld (Derry City), Thomas Dunne (Dundalk); Paul Carlyle (Derry City), Alan Byrne (Shamrock Rovers), Pat Fenlon (Bohemians), Tom McNulty (Dundalk); Padraig Dully (Shelbourne), David Tilson(Bohemians)."
"SUBSTITUTES: Alan O'Neill (Shamrock Rovers, Dave Barry (Cork City), Paul Whelan (Bohemians), Mark Rutherford (Shelbourne), Derek Swan (Shamrock Rovers)."
"Post Match Report:"
"Often criticised last season for their willingness to settle for the draw, the Bord Gais National League's finest had much to be pleased within a 2-2 scoreline at packed Tolka Park last night as they played with a far greater coherance than previously."
"Twelve months ago Manchester United and Celtic comfortably defeated the domestic League side and on paper Leeds looked capable of doing even greater damage. Without new striker Brian Deane, who was ill, or old one Lee Chapman, who remains transfer-listed, though, they lacked penetration up front while at the back their problems at centre-half remain acutely obvious."
"To say that Leeds don't travel well is one of football's understatements, and having done little more than hold their own in the opening stages, they were despatched to another inhospitable visitors' dressing room by a wonderfully placed forty-fourth minute looping header from Dave Tilson off a fifty yard lob by Mick Neville."
"Drogheda born Gary Kelly, formerly a striker and now apparently a very fine full-back, started the move that put Carl Shutt through for the equaliser nine minutes after the break and twelve minutes later Gary Speed headed home for a lead that had had an inevitability about it for some time by then as the local defence began to crumble under the weight of relentless pressure from McAllister and Strachan. At this stage the flow of play was going very much the way of United but, just as the possibility of a late rout loomed, however Mark Beeney, the man bought because of John Lukic's frailties, was caught off his line as Tilson's seventy-eighth minute cross was sent flying over the hapless goalkeeper and into the net by the head of Pat Fenlon."
